Offering Violin, Cello, Viola and Bass Lessons in the Suzuki Method for greater Augusta, Georgia.
Suzuki Strings of Augusta, Inc. is a community music education program that began in the late 1970s through a partnership between Lois Akins and Carol Lapp, two friends who played with the Augusta Symphony. In 1978, when Mrs. Lapp requested that Mrs. Akins teach her daughter violin, the latter embarked on a journey that led to what is now Suzuki Strings of Augusta. The organization has continuously served students in the Central Savannah River Area for over 40 years.
SSA educates students in the Suzuki Method created by Dr. Shin'ichi Suzuki in the 1940s. The Suzuki Method boasts a philosophy that "every child can" learn music in the same way that they learn to speak their native language. This is why you will see many Suzuki students begin as early as 3 or 4 years of age. With frequent repetition, positive reinforcement, and ear training, along with a strong partnership between teacher, parent and student, every child can learn to play music at a high level, regardless of their innate talent or personal challenges. This form of education seeks to develop the whole child, not just their musical ability and aims to add beauty to the life of the student as well as to the world around them through music. Students gain opportunities to develop skills and abilities involving perseverance, focus, public performance, group performance, confidence and communication with many different age groups.
We serve students of all ages in Augusta and the CSRA. Our current instrumental offerings include violin, viola, cello and bass. Students take private lessons with one of our teachers, usually weekly, as well as group lessons about twice per month. The group lessons include playing and reading classes, and for the older and more experienced students, ensemble rehearsals are held at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Our Senior Ensemble members are capable of performing as a whole group, in quartets or as soloists for events.

We are dedicated to the Suzuki philosophy.
Shinichi Suzuki was a violinist, educator, philosopher and humanitarian. Born in 1898, he studied violin in Japan for some years before going to Germany in the 1920s for further study. After the end of World War II, Dr. Suzuki devoted his life to the development of the method he calls Talent Education.
Suzuki based his approach on the belief that “Musical ability is not an inborn talent but an ability which can be developed. Any child who is properly trained can develop musical ability, just as all children develop the ability to speak their mother tongue. The potential of every child is unlimited.”
